One major advantage for them: I won't be able to mess around and be a nuisance for them, nor understand the readers' subsequent reactions! Maybe that'll be a plus!

@Joseph: you've spotted the true traps. It was fascinating (to me!) to see how often I would have tended to opt for the English wording, when it wasn't in keeping with the general tone chosen. Fortunately, the translator, Katy Scrogin stuck to her guns! It is translated into American English.

(Now I suppose I had better try and translate the above piece into some form of English!)

Congratulations, at last, Cathy.

How do you go about translating from one language to another? One can simply say there are many 'traps' in doing so .......!

How can one translate what the French call 'un ascensceur'? Personally, I would call it 'a lift'. For an American, this would be 'an elevator'!

Then, 'Yours Truly' (i.e. me!) read the French language version and wrote a synopsis in English! I must write a supplementary piece in English about this excellent novel.

(I must admit the translation to English was not that straightforward!).ritsonvaljoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13385096531243742081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3695505054232232728.post-46700195219561593572011-12-21T09:34:24.418-08:002011-12-21T09:34:24.418-08:00C'est comme retourner dans un restaurant qu...C'est comme retourner dans un restaurant qu'on particulièrement apprécié: l'émotion sera-t-elle intacte?
