Herman Idelovici must have been a fine character and evidently a good friend to the young people to whom he spoke.

To bear witness to the hell that the Nazi death camps cannot have been easy. Yet, through bearing witness Herman has made an unforgettable impact on the post-war generations. How could a survivor find the words to speak of unimaginable personal experiences? Yet, Herman managed to do this, somehow come to terms with it, gained a respect and many friendships that will last beyond the grave.

Cathy's account of the life of Herman Idelovici, a special friend brings to a poem written in German by the Austrian poet Erich Fried (1921 - 1988), "Gegen Vergessen"("Against Forgetting"). The first two verses (translated into English) I feel may also apply to Herman Idelovici:

"I want to remember
that I want not to forget
for I want to be me
And I want to remember
that I want to forget
for I want not to suffer too much

I want to remember
that I want not to forget
that I want to forget
for I want to know myself."

In the original German:

"Ich will mich erinnern
daß ich nicht vergessen will
denn ich will ich sein
ich will mich erinnern
daß ich vergessen will
denn ich will nicht zuviel leiden

Ich will mich erinnern
daß ich nicht vergessen will
daß ich vergessen will
denn ich will mich kennen"
-----------

May Herman Idelovici rest in the peace he rightly deserves!ritsonvaljoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13385096531243742081noreply@blogger.com
